PACE

August 28, 2012 by Su Burnett

Today, the horses are saying PACE, PACE, PACE, get yourself in PACE! PACE is a simple series of movements that are based on the copyrighted work of Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D, and Gail E. Dennison. Brain Gym is a registered trademark of Brain Gym International. I first encountered PACE when I took Brain Gym Level one in 1999. Since then I’ve been recommending them to athletes, artists, healers and anyone who desires to switch gears and benefit from synchronizing our brain and body to work as a team. Try some, they are simple but incredibly effective. The horses highly recommend PACE, especially before competing or taking a lesson.

Here is a video to guide you through PACE. I would like to thank Lauren for so graciously letting me film her demonstrating PACE.

Go ahead, Roll your eyes!

August 23, 2012 by Su Burnett

Do some eye rolls, go ahead I dare ya!
Eye rolls stretch our eyes and are of great benefit.
Especially, when time is spent looking at computer screen or phone screen, which you are doing right now!
They relax the eyes, neck and shoulder muscles and improves our focusing, reading and writing skills.

The horse’s highly recommend this stretching and relaxing of the eyes. A lot of them get directions from our eyes. They often say that stiff eyes misdirect them. So do some before every ride, they’ll benefit your abilities to co-ordinate and move as a team.

Smile, Smile and Smile some more.

July 1, 2011 by Su Burnett

Am very excited today, I have a clinic at a stables in two days. I am booked for 6 hours, plus my 2 hours driving time. I love and really enjoy clinics, meeting horses in person, experiencing their smell, their personality and their sense of humour is always a delightful part of my job. Meeting and having the opportunity to talk with their humans is always engaging, informative, inspiring and down right fun. I am sooooo looking forward to it!

In preparation for that amount of work, standing for 6 hours, remaining focused, friendly and using all my senses to translate,  part of me wants to conserve energy, rest and remain still. The horses on the other hand have a different perspective than me, they are recommending relaxing, energizing, stretching and smiling!

To smile, smile, smile, smile and smile some more.  That all I have to do is stretch my body, do some twists, lunges, forward and back bends, take a swim and relax in the sun, enjoy the day….And to smile for ten minutes at a time. This will help me be able to smile for six hours straight in two days.  So am off to relax on this lovely holiday and smile with everyone I meet! Hope you’re smilin’ too!

Tail Pulls

June 16, 2011 by Su Burnett

Tail Pulls

As I was preparing to do this blog , I asked my friends the horses, what would be the most beneficial subject for them today, their unanimous reply was TAIL PULLS, TAIL PULLS, TAIL PULLS!

This makes me laugh, if the horses could convey one thing to all humans, besides the fact that they enjoy sharing our company immensely, is that they need their tails pulled everyday. For them it is a wonderful stretch…their spines go from their nose to the tip of their tail….giving it a pull aligns their spine and stretches their whole body.

Horse’s will stretch into a tail pull, usually forward, so it’s a good idea to be aware of putting weight into your legs and feet or brace your feet against the stall door if possible.

With one hand, gently lift the tail, close to the dock and feel it’s weight, notice if the tail is tight against the back, this will give you an indication of how tight the spine is. Now, gently rotate the tail in small circles to the right, do about five. Now rotate in small circles to the left five times. Gently drape the tail onto the right haunch and let it rest there for a minute, repeat on the left side.

Now you are ready to do some tail pulls, as you gently grasp the tail, with feet braced, inhale and as you exhale, pull the tail.

Take a nice deep inhale and e-x-h-a-l-e and pull.

Always do a minimum of three pulls, your horse will thank you, thank you, thank you!
