This is a story about a very sweet dog, I often see him in my head when I am in need of comfort and the assurance that everything really is okay, to do my best to relax, trust and have some faith that what I am creating will turn out better than I can imagine.
It is autumn, I am sitting in a chilly garage in New Brunswick, Canada. With me, is a lovely woman in her 40’s, her Mum and a jaunty, cheerful Jack Russell. He has just driven with his lovely human from Ottawa. His human is mentally and physically fatigued, is crying, sad, her spirits are low and she is experiencing some culture shock. She has just packed up, moved house, quit her job, split from her husband, driven 985 km and is living with her Mum. She is in very much doubt about her decisions and is really upset about whether bringing the Jack Russell, was the right thing to do. Would he have rather stayed in Ottawa with her husband?
The Jack Russell reassures her that he HAD to come with her, she is HIS human! That everything was okay. Really. That she was just exhausted…That she could relax now. Her Mum was agreeing, nodding her head.
But, the Jack Russell’s human, just slumped further down into her chair, swallowing the tears and shook her head. Maybe she should have stayed in Ottawa, maybe she should have stayed with her husband, maybe if she had of done something different, given it one more chance, it would have worked….The Jack Russell assured her that she had made the best decision for everyone, including herself. That once she was rested up, she would understand that. She was just really tired and it was making her doubtful, anxious and regretful.
After several more minutes of her weeping and stating her lack of trust in her abilities, capabilities and decision making skills, that she needed help and was a victim to the circumstances, this is what the Jack Russell said..
“Everything really is okay. You were talking to God, the whole trip in the car and he was listening and he’s here to help.”
Perplexed, the Jack Russell’s human, quickly shook her head and reared back in her seat, No, that wasn’t right, she wasn’t speaking to God, she NEVER spoke to God, she didn’t believe in God.
“Yes, you were!” He said, wagging his tail. ” You were talking to God the whole trip in the car and hew was listening to you the whole time and he’s here to help!”
“No.” She stated flatly, crossing her arms, frowning and shaking her head. “He’s wrong, I don’t understand, I NEVER talked to God, I wasn’t talking to him, I really don’t believe in a God. What does he mean?”
By now, this delightful little dog, was standing up, ears perked up, looking straight in her eyes, “Yes you did! You were talking to me, the WHOLE trip, weren’t you???” He asked with a prance backwards and forwards followed by several wags of the tail.
“Yessssss… I did…..” She replied hesitantly, nodding her head.
“Welllll….” He wagged and pranced. “GOD backwards is DOG! SO, you WERE talking to God the whole trip and I HEARD you!” He concluded with a whole body wag and an exuberant swoop of his tail.
“Ohhhhhhh…It’s true!” She burst out, joining her Mum and I as we laughed out loud at the a truth of this and the antics of this sweet, wise, proud little Jack Russell.
